Sue Wademan

Sue Wademan is one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary textile artists. Her art career started in the advertising business as a graphic designer. She dabbled in pottery, puppetry and then, in the early 90’s, became involved in the creative quilt movement in Sydney. Her Collage for Artquilts’ workshop was published in 1997, in the book Quilt Skills, and Sue went on to teach her unique fabric collage technique around the world: Japan, USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, South Africa, Australia and of cause her beloved New Zealand.

The inspiration for her artworks has come primarily from the majestic landscape of Central Otago, the Alpine area of the South Island of NZ - the lakes, mountains, rivers and even the vineyards - working with the seasons’ ever changing colours. Sue ‘sees’ her world in a slightly different way to most of us as she is vision impaired, but this has only enhanced her insight and capacity to create unique works of art.

Sue has won many local art awards, including the prestigious ‘Best Landscape’ award at The Aspiring Art Prize, Wanaka, in 2013. Her work is in public & private collections around the world and her art has been published in many publications including the books ‘Stitch - Contemporary New Zealand Textile Artists” by Ann Packer in 2006 and ’Her Space’ by Marilyn Jessen, in 2016.
